Contact Lenses
- Contact lenses for many patients can open up a whole new visual world. Not only can patients see clearer with contact lenses but it also gives them more confidence in themselves.
- Contact Lenses can be worn by all age groups and are available to most prescriptions, long sighted, short sighted and those with astigmatism. Even bifocal and multifocal contact lenses can be supplied and there are contact lenses to enhance or change your eye colour.
- You can opt to wear Contact Lenses just for leisure and sport, or all day every day (although we would recommend you remove the lenses for an hour or two before bed and to have a current pair of spectacles to hand for those occasional days off). Contact lenses should not be worn when you are ill.
- Modern Lenses are either Durable or Disposable. Durable lenses are worn during the day for several months and disposed of only when worn out. The most popular durable lens is the Rigid Gas Permeable lens.
- Most soft contact are disposable, programmed to be replaced at regular intervals (monthly, fortnightly or daily).
Rigid Gas Permeable, Contact Lenses
- Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses are individually designed and made for you and have the widest possible range of prescriptions, fittings and materials.
- The quality of vision is often superior to soft contact lenses. Also, since they are smaller and less delicate than soft lenses, they are often easier to handle, insert and remove.
- Basic lenses will correct low amounts of astigmatism, but there is also a full range of toric lenses available and bifocal / multifocal lenses can be fitted for those who need extra help with close work.
- With lenses lasting up to two years and a simple care regime, they can be the least expensive option.
- Rigid Gas Permeable lenses are often as comfortable as soft, but the build-up to all-day wear takes longer (up to four weeks). They are generally unsuitable for intermittent wear and should be worn most days to maintain tolerance. Eye colour changing is not possible.
- Rigid lenses are also generally safer than soft lenses with less risk of contact lens related eye problems.
- With all the advantages listed above we fit very few patients with gas permeable lenses now due to the initial discomfort these lenses cause.

- Soft lenses allow more flexible wear. There is no need to wear the lenses everyday and you can easily alternate with spectacles. We prefer to fit disposable soft lenses, which are available in most prescriptions, including toric lenses (to correct astigmatism), varifocal lenses and tinted lenses to change or enhance the colour of your eyes.
- Disposable soft lenses are more convenient and carry a lower risk of eye trouble than traditional durable soft lenses and caring for them is simpler. As you always have extra lenses to hand, problems with split or damaged lenses are eliminated. Your lenses are normally replace monthly, fortnightly or daily.
