Contact lenses for many patients can open up a whole new visual world. Not only can patients see clearer with contact lenses but it also gives them more confidence in themselves.
The contact lens examination involves:
HISTORY & SYMPTOMS
Many questions are asked here to clarify why the patient wants contact lenses and how often they are going to be worn. This is to verify which type of contact lens is likely to be most suitable.
EXTERNAL OCULAR EXAMINATION
The front part of the eye is examined under high magnification to make sure that there are no abnormalities which contraindicate contact lens wear.
OCULAR MEASUREMENTS
Many accurate corneal measurements have to be taken to ensure the correct contact lens is chosen for the initial fitting.
LENS INSERTION
The appropriate diagnostic contact lens is then inserted onto the eye and alowed to settle for around 15 minutes. The lenses even at this stage are very comfortable as most contact lenses are made mostly of water.
LENS FITTING
Once the lenses have settled they are used to discern what contact lens shape, size, power and material will be most suitable.
ORDERING
When the above has been completed the correct contact lenses are then ordered and a contact lens teach appointment is made.
CONTACT LENS TEACH
This appointment lasts approximately one hour. At the time of the teach we show patients how to put the contact lenses on the eye and take them out, how to use appropriate solutions to look after them, how many hours they can wear the lenses, as this varies from patient to patient. All the do's and don'ts that go with the contact lenses.
If at this stage the patient can demonstrate to us that they are able to do and understand all of the above the lenses are then given to them.
AFTERCARE
To ensure safe contact lens wear we must see all patients at regular intervals for which reminder letters are sent at the correct time.
